Committee reports:
Eagle Scout program: We need to purse Eagle Scout ceremony's in local areas by keeping our eyes and ears open to leads and work with the Sioux
Council for this years program.
Kaps4Kids program: Dan Anderson has renewed our contact with Avera Children's Hospital to get the K4K's program up and running again after the pandemic.
Dan met with Avera's Head Nurse and had a picture taken with her but unfortunately he was not allowed to visit any kids due to pandemic.
Yankton Memorial Planning committee: A model Gato Class submarine for the Yankton VFW to display with plague detailing the Sub Vets of WWII as the primary
sponsors of the memorial has been purchased and Nate brought it with him to show everyone the high quality model it is.
Now we need to work with the Yankton VFW to proceed with displaying it and dedicate it this May during our Memorial service.
Storekeeper: The Base currently does not have a Storekeeper, however Kent was past and has 2022 USSVI Calendars available for $10.
I will mail to you for additional $2.
Old/Unfinished business:
Sioux Falls Veterans Park: Brian Schnurr has made contact with the SF Park & Rec Dept to work on our efforts to place a USSVI memorial at the park.
Base member overwhelmingly supported the stone and/or metal benches, eternal patrol bronze plaque with stone base, to several other ideas.
If you would like to volunteer, contact Brian
National and Local Dues are now PAST due. National is $25 and Local is $10.
New Business:
- Base positions that need to be filled are: COB, Storekeeper. If you are interested and want to participate more actively, please volunteer!
- We discussed what we want to accomplish and work towards and this is the list...
- Even Month Recruiting trips - Even months arrange visits to towns with AL/VFW support to recruit.
Overall support for this plan BUT due to Covid pandemic we must wait till people feel more safe.
- Sub Vets of WWII - Make a documentary on the Sub Vets of WWII Yankton Base and put together information from the Yankton vets for
a "story we can tell" on how the memorial arrived at Yankton. Working with several original members to put together relevant information on story.
- Sub Memorial at SF VA & Alliance - VA is remodeling and we should get display case at VA and at the SF Alliance.
We are pursuing all options, contacted the VA on display case, contacted SF Alliance and Yankton VFW on model submarines to
display at their facilities along with signage to honor those who served. Yankton VFW should honor the Sub Vets of WWII and the
SF Alliance should honor the Scorpion Base 278 the "Founding Fathers of the USS South Dakota SSN 790".
- We now have the model Gato sub for the Yankton VFW but need to check on display case or if they have a special place for it.
- Parade Banner need updating - Get time to look at some "better" banners to draw attention. Tim M. has relative who makes banners and
would give us a good price. Other ideas?
- Sioux Falls Veterans Park - Get together with SF Park & Rec. Brian S. met with Park & Rec to discuss what the Base is trying to do and that we want,
bench, plaque, etc. at the SF Veterans Park. Found out we have to get on the City schedule to implement any changes in the Park.
- May Memorial Service - Discussed about contacting a speaker but until this pandemic subsides we don't know what the "status" will be in May
but plan to hold the memorial service at the memorial. Do we want a speaker? Members discussed asking Matt Michels, former Lt. Gov. to speak to group.
Have also been notified by the Yankton VFW that they may host a 100 + 1 year anniversary for the VFW that day but don't know if that will effect us.
We also want to dedicate the model sub at that time too.
- Secure Federal or State Grants - Roger brought up that we might be able to get funds for projects.
- We discussed Public Service Announcements to recruit.
- Gerold D. brought up that Amazon Smile will allow you to select your favorite charity to support thought its program and you can select the USSVI...as
we are non-profit.
Next meeting is Saturday, March 19th, 2022 at the SF DAV....Gwen is hopefully cooking again!!
