USS Scorpion SS-278 Base
July 9th, 2016 Base meeting minutes

Base meeting was held at the DAV in Sioux Falls SD with Al serving our noon meal of burgers and brats!
We thank him for doing all the extra work it takes to put on a meal for the crew!
Members attending: Mike Neuroth, Brian Schnurr, Bernard Jung, Kent Winter, Gerold Davey, Al Small, Dan Anderson,
Roger Zarn, Jim Black, Dean Deuel and Tim Madden and Ray Decker.

Secretary/Treasurers reports:There were no May meeting minutes to approve. Tim reported Base account at $5,581.19;
Torpedo account at $3,050. Tim has a new mailing address of 508 Birch St Apt 7, Avon SD 57315. Home Federal merged with
Great Western Bank for our Base bank account.

Committee reports:
Eagle Scout program: Jerry will work with Sioux Council to set up next years Eagle Scout Award program.
Kaps4Kids program: Al has set up 2 Kaps 4 Kids events at Sanford Childrens and Avera Pediatric Ward during Navy
Week July 18th and 21st respectively. Will coordinate with Commissioning Committee to get USS South Dakota crew to the events.
Yankton Memorial Planning committee: Jim Black & Tim Madden are checking the City of Yankton. Jim has met with Capt Deb
whose prior Navy contacts at Ordinances across the USA might be able to find us a real torpedo! Continued Good luck Jim!
Storekeeper: Jerry has all the items we need for vests, caps, pins & patches through the Nation site. Contact Jerry if
you need anything!

Old/Unfinished business:
Our May Memorial service at the USS Scorpion SS-278 went great with the largest crowd attending since we started! You can check
out pictures on the website! Thanks to the many guys, and gals, that stepped forward and helped make this a success that we can
continue to build on! Capt Deb and the visiting crew members really added a special touch to the event.
Jerry is emailing and calling Base members on updating their contact information. Dont be surprised if you get a call or email
and please help us keep up to date on your current situation and health.
New Diving Alarm was built and brought in by Brian Schnurr and tested out. It works! Thanks Brian!
Donation to the USS South Dakota Commissioning Committee for $500 was tabled by vote. Want to ensure donation to Chief Petty Officer
level to receive sponsorship items from the sub.
Navy League is having formal signing of South Dakota Council at the Monday July 18th ceremony.
Sioux Falls Air Show will host the big event July 23 & 24 which will be the last days of the officially announced Navy Week
in Sioux Falls. That will run Monday, July 18th through Sunday, July 24th.

New Business:
MK-14 Torpedo: We have $3,050 in Torpedo account ready for expenses when we find a real MK-14 torpedo.
Continue to solicit funds for the Torpedo account with Jim Black is heading the push.
Get with State of SD to officially get memorial marked as State Historical.
USS South Dakota SSN-790: Keel Laying ceremony was April 4th in RI. Capt Deb and several others went.
Go online to www.ssn790.com and see the pictures!
No word “Home Port for a Day” events.
Suggested to look at stuffed buffalo as souvenir for visiting crew members (edit: this is for the new family welcome abord packages for the ships crew)
Tim wants to show the flag at the different Veterans Day events across SD on Sept 3rd.
Tim has lined up Riverboat Days parade in Yankton August 20th and Dan has lined up Turkey Days parade in Worthington Sept 17th.
Kent will get candy from Queen City unless someone has better prices.
Base elections were held and by a favorable vote all current Base Officers are now re-elected for a 2 year term!

please contact Kent.
USS South Dakota SSN 790 Commissioning Committee is asking for volunteers at Navy Week tent Saturday and Sunday.
All interested members should contact Kent.
District 3 is asking about a District 3 Base meeting to be held in Omaha possibly Sept 16th. All members may attend but only Base
Officers can vote.

Al request Base donate $100 to SF DAV, motion approved.

Next meeting is Saturday, September 10th, 2016 at the SF DAV at 12 noon.
We’ll see if we can get Gwen back for some Louisiana cookin’!

The 50/50 drawing was held and Al Small had his named pulled for $56, he donated it back to Base!

Meeting adjourned at 2:30pm.
